Using Personalized Assessments in the Treatment of Childhood OCD

Exposure with response prevention (ERP) is the first-line treatment for children and adolescents iwth OCD. We are conducting this study to learn whether personalized assessment of childhood OCD symptoms using mobile health technology is can be integrated into ERP and whether this personalized approach yields more efficient and/or effective outcomes compared to the standard-of-care for youth with OCD. It is our hope that we can use this information to improve current assessments and treatments for youth with OCD. (IRB00406231)

Overview of Study Procedures

Phone Screen

The phone screen will allow us to learn more about you to help us determine if the study will be a good fit. The initial intake phone call may take up to 30 minutes.

Visit 1

At the initial visit, which can be completed virtually via HIPAA-compliant teleconferencing software (e.g., Zoom), you and your child will complete an interview to determine full eligibility. This is the only virtual visit.

2-week Pre-Treatment Survey Period

During the next two weeks, you and your child will complete ratings of identified OCD symptoms multiple times per day on an electronic smart device (e.g., iPad, smartphone).

Visit 2

At the second visit, you and your child will complete some assessments about OCD. Then, youth will be randomized by coin flip to receive one of two treatments for OCD: either personalized CBT (based on daily ratings on electronic devices) or standard CBT.

Treatment

Youth will complete 12-weeks of exposure-based CBT treatment for OCD, with brief assessments asking questions about OCD and common co-occurring psychiatric symptoms throughout. Therapy sessions can be conducted in-person or via Zoom.

2-week Post-Treatment Survey Period

After completing treatment, you and your child will complete ratings of identified OCD symptoms multiple times per day on an electronic smart device (e.g., iPad, smartphone).

Post-Treatment

At the final study visit, you and your child will complete some assessments and rating forms about OCD and co-occurring psychiatric symptoms.
