What are Anxiety Disorders?

Anxiety disorders in children are common as 8-10% of children suffer from anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders are characterized by excessive fear, related to a perceived immediate threat, and/or excessive anxiety, related to the anticipation of future threats. While anxiety disorders can be highly comorbid with each other, they often differ from one another in the types of situations or objects that induce this fear and/or anxiety. Specific anxiety disorders include separation anxiety disorder, selective mutism, specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder.

Signs & Symptoms

In children, signs and symptoms of anxiety related issues may include:

  • Reluctance to attend school, camps, or sleepovers
  • Fears of being separated from parents for even short periods of time
  • Shyness that interferes with making friends or participating in activities
  • Excessive worries and need for reassurance
  • Aches and pains (e.g., stomach aches)
  • Sleep problems
  • Trouble concentrating

Treatment for Anxiety Disorders

There are a number of treatments that are effective in helping youngsters with anxiety related concerns. Early diagnosis and intervention can bring much-needed relief to everyone in the family. Our program offers a thorough assessment with diagnostic clarification, individual and family work that includes cognitive behavioral therapy, and pharmacological intervention when indicated. Psychiatrists and psychologists work together to provide this coordinated care.
